Winter Driving is a Problem. Most Drivers Don’t Know There’s a Solution.

Three-fourths of American drivers say they feel unsafe driving on the road at least a few times each winter. But the problem isn’t wintry roads – it’s the tires.

Only three in 10 Americans know that “all season tires” aren’t actually meant for driving in all four seasons in most parts of the United States. The “all season” name is a misnomer in areas that experience wintry weather. As drivers prepare for the winter travel season, it’s important for them to get answers that’ll keep them safe on the road. Fortunately, Nokian Tyres came up with a tire safety solution to protect drivers all year long. And we’re celebrating it this week.

What’s the deal with all season tires?

If you live in an area that doesn’t experience much wintry weather, all season tires like the Nokian Tyres One are a great year-round option. They’re built to thrive on rainy roads, withstand summer heat and remain durable for tens of thousands of miles.

But when temperatures dip below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius), all season tires’ rubber compounds harden and lose their grip. That’s why we invented the winter tire – to provide rubber that’s more responsive with temps plummet.

Winter tires aren’t for everyone either

But for many North American drivers, it’s hard to justify a dedicated set of winter tires. Maybe their winter weather isn’t severe enough. Maybe they only visit wintry areas but live somewhere warmer, like folks in Denver or Salt Lake City. Or maybe, even if winter tires are the best choice, they’re looking for a year round compromise.

But there’s a solution! Enter the all weather tire

Unlike their all season counterparts, all weather tires are certified for driving in wintry weather. In fact, all weather tires are designed for year-round use in snow, rain and heat alike.

Nokian Tyres introduced the first all-weather passenger tire 24 years ago. The goal: to offer a 12-month driving solution for drivers who visit winter – or have winter visit them. In 2024, we introduced our sixth-generation all-weather tire: the Nokian Tyres Remedy WRG5.

How can you spot the difference between an all season tire and an all weather tire? It’s easy. Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall. If you see it, the tire has been tested in snowy weather. If you don’t see it, we don’t recommend taking that tire into sustained wintry conditions.

The difference between all season tires and all weather tires is that the latter is certified for winter with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol.

Even better news – our all terrain tires come with the snowflake. So whether you’re venturing into mud, gravel or snow, the Nokian Tyres Outpost Family has you covered.

Nokian Tyres is celebrating “All Weather Tire Week” Oct. 2-6, 2023 to educate drivers about the only true four-season driving solution – all weather tires. We invite you to check out our social media channels -- @NokianTyresNA on Instagram and Facebook – to learn more about the true four season driving safety solution.
