Testing in Extreme Conditions

Approximately 50% of product development costs are spent on testing. Adequate test results cannot be achieved just in laboratory conditions and through automated tests. Therefore we test our products in real-life environments. This ensures that our products perform exactly as they should even in the most demanding, difficult and changing conditions.

Nokian Tyres is deeply rooted in North European soil. The company is the northernmost tire manufacturer in the world. It developed its first tires over 70 years ago. Nokian Tires dedicates at least half of the year to serious winter tire testing. Braking, accelerating, handling tests, driving on a round circuit and up a steep hill on ice and snow again and again comes as a natural choice for the inventor of winter tires. Uncompromising testing demands an almost endless amount of repetition in constant conditions in order to obtain reliable results.

The unique formula of winter testing
= 24/7 + 6months + Nordic weather

North of the Arctic Circle, in the town of Ivalo in Finnish Lapland, the company operates a proving ground with over 700 hectares of land where product development and testing teams and test drivers put tires to a trial with the task of identifying the best winter tires.

State-of-the-art equipment, versatile tests and skilled and experienced people see to it that all the extreme situations of winter driving are thoroughly studied in Ivalo.  Our demanding development work, whose foremost goal is safety, defies and exceeds the limits of a tires' grip.

On the Nokia proving ground, which spreads over an area of 30 hectares, Nokian Tyres simulates almost all driving situations on northern roads.
