Hakka Stories -- A Nokian Tyres Blog

Here's how we helped protect the planet last year

Nokian Tyres recycled or reused 100 percent of production waste at our North American factory and globally in 2022, according to our 2022 Corporate Sustainability Report.

The zero-waste-to-landfill milestone at our award-winning Dayton Factory is among the environmental accomplishments highlighted in the report. We also reduced global production emissions, committed to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and teamed up with POWDR and One Tree Planted for the second straight year to plant trees in line with season passes sold by the resort company.

“Achieving the net-zero commitment by 2050 may feel distant, but in practice it means that actions and innovation are needed today. Committing to net-zero is a natural continuation of our work for the environment and our aim to be the leader in sustainability in tire industry,” says Teppo Huovila, Vice President, Quality and Sustainability at Nokian Tyres.

An important factor in achieving the net-zero target will be the new factory that Nokian Tyres is building in Oradea, Romania. It will be the first zero CO2 emission factory in tire industry. The construction will begin soon, and commercial tire production is expected to start in early 2025.

Closer to home, our North American Factory earned zero-waste-to-landfill status in 2022. We recycled or reused 100 percent of waste from production.

The Dayton Factory is the only tire production facility in the world to earn LEED v4 Silver certification, and in 2022 more than 11 percent of energy expended at the facility came from renewable sources. A three-megawatt solar array completely powers the administration building at the Dayton campus, as well as a portion of production.

In our three-plus years of operations in Dayton, we have earned recognition for our workplace culture, operations and sustainability. Nokian Tyres was the Chattanooga Regional Manufacturers Association’s Company of the Year in 2021, and we were the first in Rhea County history to receive the prestigious Tennessee Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award.

Our sustainability efforts have added up over time. Since 2015, greenhouse gas emission intensity has decreased by 43 percent. And we're doing our part to help absorb emissions across the United States by teaming up with POWDR and One Tree Planted to plant a tree for every eligible season pass sold between April and November of last year.

We are passionate about our quest to help protect drivers and the planet, and we believe those goals should go hand in hand. Click here to download our full 2022 Corporate Sustainability Report!
