What makes our most popular tire so tough?

The same fiber that reinforces armored vests and spacecraft landing cushions is now being used to protect drivers of passenger cars from potholes. And Nokian Tyres is behind the innovation.

It’s the most exciting feature in our popular all-season passenger tire, the Nokian Tyres One. The tire is the One for safety, the One for durability, and the One for sustainability.

What is that material?

The sidewalls of the Nokian Tyres One are infused with Aramid, a fiber better known by its trademarked name of Kevlar. Before we go any further, let's be clear: We don't recommend shooting at your tires; that's not why the material is there. Instead, its purpose is to strengthen the tire against potential impacts from potholes, curbs and other road hazards.

We use Aramid Sidewall Technology in many of our tires, including the newest generation of each SUV and light truck tire we make. But this is the first time we've used Aramid in a tire made for smaller passenger vehicles. Drivers and tire dealers are raving about the tire's toughness; in fact, one dealer uses the tire to chase storms.

Brandon Payne trusts the Nokian Tyres One to chase storms in his native Nebraska, in part due to the toughness that comes from Aramid technology in the tires.

How does Aramid work?

When you drive over a pothole, the vibration from the impact places the biggest stress on the sidewalls. Aramid is a lightweight fiber that strengthens the rubber in the sidewalls, making it tough enough to help avoid punctures.

“Think of it like using fibreglass to reinforce construction materials,” says Nokian Tyres North America Director of Products Steve Bourassa.

Even better: Since Aramid is lightweight, it doesn't impact a tire's performance or longevity. Since it's chemically neutral, "we don’t have to change the recipe for the tire compound, and it doesn’t have a big impact on longevity or tire wear," Bourassa says.

  What benefits can drivers enjoy?

As a global leader in safety and sustainability, we are so confident in the Nokian Tyres One that we’re providing a Pothole Protection warranty to drivers who purchase the tire. If a road hazard damages the tire beyond repair, we will replace it at no cost.

And the tire’s rugged construction allows it to carry a high mileage warranty – 80,000 miles or 130,000 kilometers.

As one of the safest, most durable tires we’ve ever produced, the Nokian Tyres One is a great option for drivers throughout the United States and Canada.

The Nokian Tyres One is exclusively for sale in North America and produced at our state-of-the-art factory in Dayton, Tennessee.
