What does speed class mean?

Your vehicle registration will note what speed class is suitable for you. Car manufacturers determine tire size and speed class to make sure the tires can accommodate the top reachable speed. The speed class is indicated by the second-to-last letter in the tire marking: In a tire size 205-55 R 16 V XL, the speed class is V for a maximum speed of 149 mph. Always use the speed rating recommended by your car’s manufacturer.

Common speed classes include:
Q = 160 km/h
R = 170 km/h
S = 180 km/h
T = 190 km/h
H = 210 km/h
V = 240 km/h
W = 270 km/h
Y = 300 km/h
