Nokian Tyres launches new all-weather performance tire: Nokian WR G4 combines high-performance, all-season handling and reliable winter grip
The versatile new Nokian WR G4, from the world’s northernmost tire manufacturer, combines high-performance, all-season handling, plus reliable winter grip to make it a true all-weather tire. Nokian Tyres’ fourth generation all-weather product line builds on the uncompromising performance of its predecessors with new innovations ensuring performance in snow storms, slush, heavy rain or sun-scorched asphalt.
With a new All Weather Dual Performance Compound, the Nokian WR G4 features longer lasting tread life and draws inspiration from nature with its Centipede Siping - jagged 3D sipes on the center rib that resemble the legs of a centipede - which grip the surface to maximize biting edges while maintaining stable handling.
The size selection ranges from 14 to 19 inches and speed ratings from H up to V. The full size selection of this new premium product will be available to consumers in early 2018.
Tested for safety
The safety properties of the Nokian WR G4 were fine-tuned at testing facilities around the globe. The unique slush-planning testing at Nokian Tyres’ White Hell proving ground allowed Nokian Tyres to improve the slush properties of the tire. The exemplary wet and dry road properties were refined on test tracks in Germany and Spain while the tread wear performance tests were completed in the United States.
Reliable, care-free driving
The Nokian WR G4 steers as precisely as an all-season tire on dry or wet highways or in busy traffic. For winter driving, it has the Mountain Snow Flake designation, ensuring predictable grip both in thick snow and slush. Additionally, the 3D locking sipes of the tread blocks improve lateral stiffness.
“The sturdy and stiff outer shoulder of the tire ensures stable and controlled handling at higher speeds,” said Olli Seppälä, Nokian Tyres product development manager. “You can always rely on it to bring you home safely.”
Maximum snow grip
The center area of the Nokian WR G4 is dominated by a sturdy longitudinal rib consisting of tread blocks. The staggered 3-dimensional Centipede Siping offers maximum contact surface and works with full effect at different turning angles, increasing grip on snow and slush and improving control.
“The rib also has hinges at the ends of the blocks, which reduces block movement,” said Seppälä “This lowers rolling resistance, which in turn improves fuel efficiency and wear resistance.”
The inner shoulder’s fan-like rib pattern with functional tread blocks and Blade Grooves efficiently routes rain, snow and slush away from the contact surface. The sipes staggered at different angles provide effective longitudinal grip and acceleration grip on snow and the wide longitudinal grooves offer lateral grip. The winter grip is further improved by the block pattern that is shaped on the inner shoulder side of the center rib. It is partially equipped with hinges and sipes and the small, heavily siped tread blocks are grooved so that every other sipe is attached on the left and every other on the right.
The edges of the longitudinal grooves on the Nokian WR G4, also have Snow Claws which improve longitudinal grip especially on snow. The precise design improves grip on snow, as well as the driving feel required for cornering and lane changes. The tread blocks are also supported by strong Groove Lifts, which increase stiffness and improve handling.
Effective hydroplaning prevention
The tire comes equipped with new Coanda Technology which combats the risk of hydroplaning. The curved, ramp-like design of the tread blocks on the inner and outer shoulder guides and accelerates the flow of water from the longitudinal grooves into the transverse grooves. The hydroplaning prevention properties are retained, even as the tire wears.
Comfortable and quiet driving
The Nokian WR G4 Silent Sidewall Technology includes a tailored special rubber compound between the sidewall and tread which actively filters the sound and vibration originating from the driving surface, preventing the passage of sound waves through the sidewall into the rim and further into the passenger compartment.
A special clinch rubber compound was also developed for the Nokian WR G4’s bead area near the tire which effectively minimizes interior noise in the vehicle by damping the vibrations from the tire body.
